It was three years ago in June 2014 that I attended my first birth. My doula studies and paperwork complete - I was ready for the hands on experience of birth support. That month of June 2014 brought a couple who trusted me to assist them in their journey after a traumatic first birth. I see the profound positive effects of a healing birth a lot in my work as birth educator and doula and also from many other women who share their story online with me. I've experienced it myself after the birth of my third baby.
We never know how birth will unfold. It is unpredictable and may have many twists and turns. However, being pregnant for so many months gives us the opportunity to PREPARE physically and mentally ..... for however the events unfold. Natalie's first birth was traumatic and motherhood left her physically and emotionally drained - she feared that she may end up with only one child. She researched HypnoBirthing (was unsure and sceptical), became pregnant again and we met. HypnoBirthing doesn't promise a quiet, painless birth but it will give you the tools to stay calm and focused in order for you and your baby to have the best possible outcome. Natalie did a lot of things different this time around; finished work four weeks prior to her due date, dedicated many hours to practising the methods, skills and tools she had learnt with me - and hired me as her doula. I felt a connection to Natalie and and her husband Craig and wanted to help them achieve the best birth possible. Supporting her birth was an honour and a privilege. She says: "Total intense labour was 3.5 hours, and I felt calm and mentally strong, using breathing and the skills learnt on the course, coupled with the support of my husband and Carrie; I knew I could do this...I wasn’t scared." Natalie's birth was the first birth I had been to since the birth of my own babies. My first taste of this doula business. Intense. Empowering. I was hooked.
